Clinical Use:

Copeptin measurements are included in the Endocrine Society of Australia/Australasian Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine/ Royal College of Pathologyists of Australia (ESA/AACB/RCPA) harmonisation guidelines for performing the water deprivation test and form part of the new diagnostic workflow for the hypertonic -saline infusion test.
Arginine Vasopressin (AVP) or Antidiruetic Hormone (ADH) is a hormone regulating fluid homeostasis and vascular tone; synthesised in the suptraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus.
Copeptin is a 39 amino-acid glycosylated peptide derived from pre-provasopressin together with AVP and neurophysin II. Copeptin is co-secreted with AVP in equimolar concentrations into circulation. Copeptin is an ideal surrogate biomarker for AVP release owing to its superior in vitro stability in serum, longer circulating half life, and increased molecular length- allowing more target epitopes for immunoassay development. |
