Lactose Tolerance Test


General
  Clinical Use: The Lactose Tolerance Test can be used to help identify lactose malabsorption due to lactase deficiency. The test involves consumption of a 50g lactose drink.
The lactose is converted by lactase to glucose, which is then absorbed into the plasma.
An appointment is required for a Lactose Tolerance Test. It is not available for <16yo.

An increase in plasma glucose > 1.0 mmol/L suggests an adequate response to lactose load.

  Collection Instructions: Lactose drink is available from Pharmacy (FSH/RPH) or QEII Phlebotomy - 6457 2048.
Prepared dose is 50g lactose for adults and children >=16yo. Dissolve powder into 250mL of warm water and cool before giving to patient.
Prepared solution is stable for 36 hours chilled.
Collect fasting sample and then 30,60,90 and 120 minutes post lactose drink.
