Protein C


General
  Clinical Use: Protein C is a Vitamin K dependent protein which plays an important role in the anticoagulant mechanism. A decrease in levels is a risk factor for thromboembolism. Protein C levels are affected by oral anticoagulants. Testing should be done at least 2 weeks post-cessation of warfarin therapy.
  Availability: Samples are batched and tested once a week.

Protein C levels may be reduced while patient is on oral anticoagulants.

  Collection Instructions: If sample will not reach laboratory within 4 hours of collection, it must be centrifuged, separated and frozen.
