Test Entry - Detail

Selenium (Whole Blood)

General
Clinical Use: Plasma selenium levels reflect recent ingection of selenium and is the best indicator of acute and chronic poisoning. Red cell or whole blood selenium may give a better indication of long term selenium status. Toxicity is not usually a problem except in acute overdose where vomiting, diahorrea and abdominal pain are typical. Deficiency of selenium correlates with loss of GPase activity and is associated with damage to cell membranes due to accumulation of free radicals. Deficiency is mainly seen in individuals on prolonged TPN or those on special diets, for example, phenylketonurics. Male infertility and impaired resistance to infection have also been associated with deficiency.
