Test Entry - Detail

Macro Prolactin

General
Clinical Use: Macroprolactin is a high molecular weight complex containing prolactin, most commonly a prolactin-IgG complex, which is detected to varying extents in all immunoassays. Macroprolactin has reduced bioactivity and patients who have circulating macroprolactin may be asymptomatic. It is cleared from the blood more slowly than monomeric prolactin, hence the apparent hyperprolactinaemia. Diagnostic confusion can be avoided if macroprolactin is identified as the cause of high prolactin levels in blood.
